    A goal-driven unsupervised image segmentation method combining graph-based processing and Markov random fields

    Image segmentation is the process of partitioning a digital image into a set of homogeneous regions (according to some homogeneity criterion) to facilitate a subsequent higher-level analysis. In this context, the present paper proposes an unsupervised and graph-based method of image segmentation, which is driven by an application goal, namely, the generation of image segments associated with a user-defined and application-specific goal. A graph, together with a random grid of source elements, is defined on top of the input image. From each source satisfying a goal-driven predicate, called seed, a propagation algorithm assigns a cost to each pixel on the basis of similarity and topological connectivity, measuring the degree of association with the reference seed. Then, the set of most significant regions is automatically extracted and used to estimate a statistical model for each region. Finally, the segmentation problem is expressed in a Bayesian framework in terms of probabilistic Markov random field (MRF) graphical modeling. An ad hoc energy function is defined based on parametric models, a seed-specific spatial feature, a background-specific potential, and local-contextual information. This energy function is minimized through graph cuts and, more specifically, the alpha-beta swap algorithm, yielding the final goal-driven segmentation based on the maximum a posteriori (MAP) decision rule. The proposed method does not require deep a priori knowledge (e.g., labelled datasets), as it only requires the choice of a goal-driven predicate and a suited parametric model for the data. In the experimental validation with both magnetic resonance (MR) and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images, the method demonstrates robustness, versatility, and applicability to different domains, thus allowing for further analyses guided by the generated product

    The relationship between knowing sign language and quality of life among Italian people who are deaf : a cross-sectional study

    Deafness is a medical condition with important relational implications. This condition could affect well-being and self-esteem and cause social anxiety. Sign language is not only a simple mimic but can be considered as a different kind of communication that could be protective for those who have learned it. However, some people do not use sign language because they think it can be marginalizing. The present study aimed to compare the quality of life (QoL) between people who learned Italian sign language as their first language with those who had never learned it or learned it later. This cross-sectional study involved 182 deaf Italian adults (70.3% females) who were recruited from Ente Nazionale Sordi (ENS) and by the main online deafness groups. The present results suggest that the deaf condition does not seem to significantly affect the dimensions of QoL pertaining to satisfaction and self-esteem, while it could have an effect on preventing high levels of social anxiety and in particular, the group who learned Italian sign language showed significantlyless social anxiety than those who had never learned it

    The loess deposits of Buca Dei Corvi section (Central Italy): Revisited

    Loess deposits have been described in the past for the upper section of Buca Dei Corvi succession (Central Italy). In this paper the depositswere re-analysed to clarify the depositional environment and to attempt a paleoclimate reconstruction. Two radiocarbon dates on pedogenic carbonate constrain the ages to the Late Glacial, and are consistent with previous OSL dating of the top of the succession. The non-marine mollusc assemblage shows typical character of cold and dry climatic conditions, testified by strong oligotypical composition. Mineralogy and geochemistry of the sediments indicate the abundant presence of exotic quartz mineral which can be explained only by wind transport. Probably,wind transportwas also responsible of deposition of carbonatewhich then dissolved and re-precipitated producing pedogenic concretions. Stable isotopes (13C/12C and 18O/16O ratios) of the concretions are consistent with a climate drier than present conditions, with an environment characterized by sparse vegetation

    Hopelessness and burnout in Italian healthcare workers during COVID-19 pandemic: the mediating role of trait emotional intelligence

    Objective: The study aims to assess the impact of COVID-19 on healthcare workers’ work-related stress during the first wave of the pandemic in Italy. The main objective is to investigate the existence of a positive correlation between hopelessness and burnout, assuming that burnout may be  a riskfactor for the development of hopelessness, and to analyze the role thattrait Emotional Intelligence (TEI) and changes in workload could have in this relationship. Furthermore, evaluate any significant differences in burnoutand hopelessness levels in the function of some demographic variables, such as gender, professional profiles, and different working zones of Italy, tobetter understand how the diverse diffusion of the pandemic had affected Italian healthcare workers. Methods: An online survey was used to collect data between April and June,2020, with 562 responses among nurses (52.1%) and physicians (47.9%).Demographics and changes in workload and work conditions were collectedthrough an ad hoc questionnaire. The Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire-Short Form (TEIQue-SF), The Beck Hopelessness Scale (BHS), and the Link Burnout Questionnaire (LBQ) were used to assess Trait Emotional Intelligence(TEI), hopelessness, and burnout, respectively. Results: Correlation analysis showed a significant positive relationship betweenhopelessness and each burnout dimension. TEI showed negative correlations both with burnout dimensions and hopelessness. Significant differences in burnout and hopelessness levels emerged as a function of some demographic variables such as gender, professional profiles (nurses or physicians), and different working zone of Italy (northern or southern). Results showed that TEI partially mediated the relationship between hopelessness and every burnout dimension,while the interaction of changes in workload was non-significant.Discussion: The mediating role of TEI in the burnout-hopelessness relationship partly explains the protective role that individual factors had on healthcareworkers mental health. Our findings support the need to integrate considerations on both psychological risk and protective factors into COVID-19 care, including the monitoring of psychological symptoms and social needs, especially among healthcare workers

    Diagnóstico inicial da presença de metais pesados em sedimento e em organismos bentônicos da ilha de Itacolomi, PR

    O presente trabalho teve como objetivo fazer um diagnóstico inicial da presença de cádmio (Cd), aresênio (As), mercúrio (Hg) e chumbo (Pb) na ilha de Itacolomi no litoral do Paraná. A análise foi feita a partir da coleta das espécies Anisotremus surinamensis (Bloch, 1791), Holocentrus adscensionis (Osbeck, 1765), Echinometra lucunter (Linnaeus, 1758) e a camada superficial de sedimento marinho em quatro pontos ao redor da ilha de Itacolomi. As amostras foram abertas utilizando a digestão ácida e analisadas em um espectrômetro de absorção atômica. As concentrações médias obtidas no presente estudo foram de 0,435 µg.g-1 para o Cd, 0,296 µg.g-1 para o Hg; o As não foi detectado e o Pb ficou abaixo do limite de quantificação para o tecido muscular da espécie H. adscensionis. Para a espécie A. surinamensis, as concentrações médias foram de 0,785 µg.g-1 para o As, enquanto para os metais Cd, Hg e Pb, as médias ficaram abaixo do limite de quantificação, também para o tecido muscular. No ouriço do mar E. lucunter o tecido gonadal apresentou as médias de 6,118 µg.g-1 para o As, 0,205 µg.g-1 para o Hg, enquanto o Cd e o Pb apresentaram médias abaixo do limite de quantificação. Na análise da presença de metais pesados no sedimento superficial, ficou evidenciado um valor médio de 0,5047 µg.g-1 para o Cd, valor médio de 3,2752 µg.g-1 para o As, 0,2235 µg.g-1 para o Hg e 0,4038 µg.g-1 para o Cu. Os resultados apresentados neste trabalho, demonstraram a presença de metais pesados abaixo dos limites estabelecidos para consumo humano (Cd e As= 1 µg.g-1; Hg = 0,5 µg.g-1; Pb = 2 µg.g-1)

    Search for Neutral Heavy Leptons Produced in Z Decays

    Weak isosinglet Neutral Heavy Leptons (νm\nu_m) have been searched for using data collected by the DELPHI detector corresponding to 3.3×1063.3\times 10^{6} hadronic~Z0^{0} decays at LEP1. Four separate searches have been performed, for short-lived νm\nu_m production giving monojet or acollinear jet topologies, and for long-lived νm\nu_m giving detectable secondary vertices or calorimeter clusters. No indication of the existence of these particles has been found, leading to an upper limit for the branching ratio BR(BR(Z0νmν)^0\rightarrow \nu_m \overline{\nu}) of about 1.3×1061.3\times10^{-6} at 95\% confidence level for νm\nu_m masses between 3.5 and 50 GeV/c2c^2. Outside this range the limit weakens rapidly with the νm\nu_m mass. %Special emphasis has been given to the search for monojet--like topologies. One event %has passed the selection, in agreement with the expectation from the reaction: %e+eˉννˉe^+e^- \rightarrow\ell \bar\ell \nu\bar\nu. The results are also interpreted in terms of limits for the single production of excited neutrinos

    Search for new phenomena using single photon events in the DELPHI detector at LEP

    Data are presented on the reaction \epem~\into~\gamma + no other detected particle at center-of-mass energies, \sqs = 89.48 GeV, 91.26 GeV and 93.08 GeV. The cross section for this reaction is related directly to the number of light neutrino generations which couple to the \zz boson, and to several other phenomena such as excited neutrinos, the production of an invisible `X' particle, a possible magnetic moment of the tau neutrino, and neutral monojets. Based on the observed number of single photon events, the number of light neutrinos which couple to the \zz is measured to be N_\nu = 3.15 \pm 0.34. No evidence is found for anomalous production of energetic single photons, and upper limits at the 95\% confidence level are determined for excited neutrino production (BR < 4-9 \times 10^{-6}), production of an invisible `X' particle (\sigma < 0.1 pb), and the magnetic moment of the tau neutrino (< 5.2 \times 10^{-6} \mu_B). No event with the topology of a neutral monojet is found, and this corresponds to the limit \sigma < 0.044/\epsilon pb at the 95\% confidence level, where \epsilon is the unknown overall monojet detection efficiency

    Measurement of the Bd0^{0}_{d} oscillation frequency using kaons, leptons and jet charge

    A measurement of the mass difference, \Delta m_d, between the two physical \mbox{B}^0_d states has been obtained from the analysis of the impact parameter distribution of a lepton emitted at large transverse momentum (p_t) relative to the jet axis and from the analysis of the flight distance distribution of secondary vertices tagged by either a high p_t lepton or an identified kaon. In the opposite hemisphere of the event, the charge of the initial quark has been evaluated using a high p_t lepton, a charged kaon or the mean jet charge. With 1.7 million hadronic Z^0 decays recorded by DELPHI between 1991 and 1993, \Delta m_d is found to be: \Delta m_d = 0.531^{+0.050}_{-0.046} ~(stat.) \pm 0.078 ~(syst.) ~ {\mathrm{ps}}^{-1} \,
